02 · Improving Communication

Turn criticism into specific requests

Address one issue at a time, describe your feelings, and make specific requests that the other person can understand.

Applicable Scenarios

When you are facing

You meant to express concern, but what came out was, "You've ruined the family again."

Core Understanding

See this clearly first

Specific requests are more likely to get responses than personality evaluations. "What I'm worried about and what I hope will happen" is clearer than "Don't do this."

What you can do

Make the Next Step Concrete

  1. Keep one sentence focused on a single topic.
  2. Start with "I see / I worry / I hope".
  3. The request includes time, action, or verifiable outcomes.

What to Avoid

These approaches are usually not helpful for communication

  • Making long-term commitments while intoxicated.
  • Digging up all the issues from years ago.
  • Interpreting silence as immediate rejection.

A small step now

First, write a sentence no longer than thirty words, read it aloud, then delete the words "always" and "never."
