The increase in alcohol-related liver disease is not caused by a single factor. Many people experience no obvious discomfort in the early stages of abnormal liver function; by the time fatigue, loss of appetite, or a dull pain in the right upper abdomen appears, the liver may have already undergone long-term inflammation and fibrosis. Who Is at High Risk

Some people develop palmar erythema (liver palms), spider angiomas on the skin, or endocrine disturbances such as breast development in men. These signs are not specific, but if they combine with a drinking habit, basic tests such as liver function and abdominal ultrasound should be performed. From Cutting Down to Stopping: A Stepwise Action Plan
The first step is objective recording. Write down the type, amount, time, and triggering context of daily drinking for one consecutive week, and you can clearly see the relationship between drinking patterns and emotions or social pressure. The second step is to set workable reduction goals, such as reducing alcohol intake by 20% per week, or arranging alcohol-free alternative activities in advance on high-risk days (such as weekends or social engagement days). The third step is to assess withdrawal risk. How Families Can Support Effectively Rather Than Confront
When you discover that a family member may have liver damage due to drinking, direct blame often triggers defensiveness. A more effective approach is to state the facts: describe the specific event, date, and consequences rather than evaluate the person's character. For example, "Last Wednesday you fell after drinking too much and scraped your knee; we were all very worried" is easier to accept than "You always drink like this."
